インディアナ州の片田舎の医師キンブルが、妻ヘレン殺しの嫌疑をかけられ、護送中の列車転覆事故を天佑にからくも逃走、自分の見た真犯人、片腕の男を追って自らも逃げ回るというストーリーで、1954年に実際に起きた「サム・シェパード事件」をヒントに作られた。

最終回は前編･後編に分けられ、後編のアメリカでの視聴率は50.7％を記録した。

ちなみに日本での視聴率は、前編 視聴率24.5％、後編（最終回）視聴率31.8％

冒頭のナレーションが有名であるが、途中から変更されている。

●初期のナレーション

リチャード・キンブル　職業-医師　目的地-州刑務所の死刑執行室
リチャード・キンブルは、その妻を殺害した罪に問われ死刑の宣告を受けた。
しかし、法律は神ならぬ人間の手によって作られ、人間が執行するものである。
恐るべき誤審はここに生じる。
リチャード・キンブルは、無実である。
だが、彼は自分の容疑を晴らすに足る事実を実証できなかった。
彼は、妻の死体を発見する直前、片腕の男が家から走り去るのを見た。
しかし、その男はついに発見されなかった。
彼は、この夜の名残に外を見つめながら、自分の運命をじっと考えてみる。
窓の外も自らの将来も暗黒だった。
しかし、その暗黒の中に運命の計り知れぬ力が潜んでいた。
