1942年から1944年の第二次大戦下のヨーロッパ戦線が舞台に、アメリカ第8空軍918爆撃隊のB-17による、イギリスのケンブリッジからドイツ本土への爆撃作戦を描いた戦争ドラマ

主人公サベージ准将は、将校でありながら自ら先頭に立ち爆撃機に乗り込むというたたきあげの猛者。

上官のウィリー少将は部下を愛する昔気質の軍人。

カリフォルニア州チノ飛行場を借りきり、チノ博物館にあったB17の実機を飛ばし、爆撃や空中戦のシーンは国防省米空軍資料室から借り出した膨大な未公開フィルムを使用することにより、毎回リアルな空中戦シーンを再現している。
