1870年代の西部を舞台に、大統領直属の秘密情報部員ジェームス・T・ウェストと、相棒で変装の名人のアーティマス・ゴードン が、秘密兵器を装備した特殊列車で各地を回り、アメリカ政府を危機に陥れようとする様々な敵と闘うアクションドラマ。
スパイものの西部劇バージョン。
0088はナポレオン･ソロの0011と同じく、本家007にあやかって、日本のテレビ局が勝手につけた番号
ちょうどこの頃から、テレビの西部劇が衰退に向かう。
なお、主人公を演じるロバート・コンラッドはブルース・リーの弟子。
